Sisters (Choka)
sisters sing the blues
tell your stories one by one
as you walk along your path
don’t hide anymore
humiliations and joys
strength and darkest depression
sisters sing the blues
don’t hide away in limbo
let your voices be heard – sing
you’re backbones of life
talented – full of creativity
don’t wait to be freed – be free
sisters sing the blues
I know the troubles you’ve seen
I know you’re something – don’t you
raise your voices – loud
sing your lonesome blues and shine
only you can change these times.

Your text (I almost wrote ‘lyrics’) makes me think of Bessie Smith. I think the poem fits her perfectly.

As long as you sing the blues will be gone from your body.

So expressive and inspiring. I don’t know what a Choka should look or sound like, but what you wrote was beautiful, powerful, and challenging all sisters to be.

That’s okay — my repertoire is free verse and limericks.
But I like learning about other forms of poetic expression

I simply loved that movie and think Whoopie Goldber outdid herself, I must have seen this film at least 10 times.
Thanks for the wonderful compliment. I like trying the “long poem” from time to time and had made my own variation when I was more naif in the facts about waka 🙂 Here’s what I wrote last year about choka: http://13thfloorparadigm.wordpress.com/2013/08/18/a-japanese-poetry-prompt-choka-variation/

I would seriously have to write this more often as well as other forms I tried…so much to do, so much to learn, so much to explore…I took 2 days off on this weekend…so four days and still not enough time…I read slowly and seem to write slowly too lately.

I know what you mean about so much to do, learn and explore – I think the autumn has a slowing effect at least on me. I noticed it last year as well .. it’s like the season’s saying that summer is past now it’s time to relax and just go with the flow (as we used to say) maybe it’s that way with you too …
