power failure
stumbling in the morning dark
– a drop of water
in the early morn
darker than middle ages
no power – silence
gas heater dripping water
on a power strip at night
(c) G.s.k. ’14
I’m terribly late writing my posts this morning due to my water heater, as you may have understood reading the tanka (not one of my better ones, I know).
This morning I woke as usual at 5:00 (actually 4:00 as I haven’t changed my inner clock back to real-time yet) and the light beside my bed didn’t work. I stayed in bed a while longer thinking the problem might be a general black-out, not really that unusual … then I realized that outside my house, the street lights were on.
It became apparent that there was a short circuit somewhere in the house. We have different power breakers to isolate different parts of our house so, turning one off one at a time, we (in the meantime I woke hubby up) had narrowed the problem down to the heater and general lights (bathroom, stairs and kitchen were ok). Unplugging everything as well as unplugging the water pump of the gas heater, didn’t resolve our problem … the circuit breaker stayed off. Finally I went to my son’s bedroom, where I’d forgotten to unplug his computer, stereo etc which are connected to a power strip. Near his computer I heard a pluck – pluck – pluck … water was dripping onto the power strip. Pulling that plug we were finally able to restore the lights to the rest of the house.
My husband found the leak … fixed it and finally at 8:00 real-time … we were back in the 21st century, power and heating working properly. I hope to be able to write something more later today, but to be on the safe side, I’m linking these poems to OctPoWriMo. Have a great day folks!
Bang on..A brilliant Haiku 🙂

Wow, what a hassle…and what a lucky escape, water and electricity not good! Good write – the haiku is indeed spot on

Well … not really a lucky escape .. as you say water and electricity don’t mix so the circuit blew (in Italian we call them “salva vita” – life saver … they refuse to let the electric flow if there’s something wrong). Glad you liked the haiku.

Well, it certainly salved your vita….

Wow that sounded dangerous x

Well .. it was more a bother as the circuit breaker of course refused to come on as long as the water and electric were in contact.

Oh, that is so scary! I’m glad you finally found out the problem and fixed it and no one was hurt. Water heaters are dangerous business. o.O
And — glad you were able to salvage the experience and turn it into a great haiku and tanka! 😉

It was a pain actually more than scary and wacked my day in the shins .. but as you say, I used the experience to write a haiku and tanka … got to do with what you’ve got! 🙂

That sounds horribly dangerous. You might have been burned in your bed. I hope all is well now.

Everything went well .. the circuit breaker interrupted the electricity immediately .. in another age, it could have been a very dangerous thing!
