Morning Haiku and Waka – December 17

Dry Grass

in the fields
grass stalks yellowed and dried
snow falls

Withered Mums

November passes
mums wither on their graves
awaiting holly

or

December
withered  mums on their graves
snowflakes on holly

Orchids

her orchids
sentinels of summer
lessons over

This haiku takes some explanation I suppose.  One of my students, Tiziana is an expert orchid grower.  At the beginning of our English conversation meetings this year she gave me a beautiful orchid … which graced my living room for many weeks.  And at the ends of our meetings she also gave me a sprig of orchids … the one in the photograph above.

the  orchid withers
