Morning Haiku and Waka – Venezia – February 24, 2015

plunk plunk plunk a drip
somewhere in the icy fog
echoes

yet another bridge
passing a dark dank alley
as Venice sleeps

morning gulls screeching
night’s fishing boats return
the Grand Canal

along the canals
dawn shimmers on the water
pigeons cooing

sloshing gondolas
sleep in the Venetian dawn
dawns early lights
pink with golden highlights
no Carnival or tourists

swirling ’round me
the fog muffles everything
but the smell of rot

Venice is a city in decay.  Centuries ago, the first settlers created Venice as a way to avoid the marauders that were flowing into the Italian peninsula.  The experiment grew, the known technology created this beautiful city of canals linking hundreds islands and artificial islands connected by hundreds of bridges in the middle of a marshy lagoon.  It’s often been on the brink of sinking. It’s foundation is an interesting mix of wooden pylons and muck.   Modern technology is trying to save Venice from sinking permanently … its population though has been greatly reduced due to the difficulties of living in a city that’s often flooded by high tide.  For more information about Venice click this LINK.

Today’s at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai artist for today’s inspiration is a little known Russian impressionist named Sapozhnikova Svetlana … a lovely touch she has indeed.

  1. Great stuff — SO many senses touched on here — and you used repetition too — I’m proud of you! 😀

It seems like it would be lovely for a visit — but so many difficulties there — haven’t read your link but *mold* would have to be at the top of the list. Uck.

It begins and ends on an ominous note. A much different depiction of Venice — and I love it. (The waka. Not that Venice is sinking, of course.)

    • Completely understand … unfortunately Venice has big problems … but I’d still like to stay there for a time. My joints and bones would hate me for that .. esp in the winter … really humid, but the silence … that is no cars or traffic just people … is so cool. The summer is a bane because of all the tourists of course, but heaven’s we’ve got tourists here too … they are “bread and butter” so one must be indulgent.
