Indian summer
golden leaves and morning frost
hazel-nuts ripen
gathering chestnuts
readying winter fire-wood
warm autumn days
these sun warmed valleys
soon will be white with new snow
persimmon’s heavy
but still green with unripe fruit
summer lingers for a while
memories of fall
daddy burning dead leaves
mom making plum jam
I cover my new school books
with brown shopping bags and tape

This poem brought a smile on my face remembering my school days ,covering my new notebooks with brown paper and proudly writing my name on it.

It would seem that covering school books was world wide … even Rall in Australia has similar memories!

Sigh… this is absolutely gorgeous. These are the sort of poems that inspire an artist to illustrate them.I can relate to this lovely childhood memory of covering books to begin the school year. Goes in my keeper file .

Thanks Rall … seems like such a mundane memory, but it accompanied me for so many years of my life … glad you enjoyed it.

Sweet memories — and I remember that sense of accomplishment in having the schoolbooks covered — and the beauty in a fresh (brown paper bag) slate for doodling! 😀
Nicely done — brava!

🙂 Yes, it was fun covering the schoolbooks and I always enjoyed that aspect of getting ready for school … as well as shopping for school clothes of course 😉

…. and I hated shopping for school clothes … but that’s a long story, lol.

Well .. it could have been a hectic affair, but it was usually just Mom and I and it was rather festive for the most part.

With my mom …. well … it was an ordeal and a half. [sigh….]

Sorry … I do remember you mentioning she wasn’t always easy to get on with.

She was *rarely* easy to get along with 😉
But hey. Gives a kid character, right? LOL!

Sorry about that … to tell the truth I could probably write a book about my Mom’s foibles … first and foremost she is/was incoherent, she had the bad habit of shouting all the both of which drove me mad … but as you say, gives a kid character. 😀

Sweet memories caught in a nice post Georgia. Here in The Netherlands we had to cover our school books too and I did that with brown paper as like those paper shopping bags.
