OctPoWriMo: Day 6 – Free Verse – October 6, 2016

a sunset in padua

a sunset in padua

The Old Couple

ripe in the silhouette of time
sprouts barbed thistle-down
inside their heart they face
the dark down-side of self

even as they speak of love,
(the cold rain of reason drizzles)
they shore up their autumn souls
against a reckless flood of passion

how far from romance here …
[read between the empty lines
of endless puerile competition]
lives the desire – to walk alone

  1. There are some old couples like this. I think it’s sad. I’d like to think that had my husband lived, we’d be the kind that were still in love. We always liked each other very well.
Your writing rings true. Sometimes this world is a terribly disappointing place.

    • Yes, sometimes it is … I’ve seen this happen to many couples I’ve known … even when not so old. It’s important to be friends I think first and foremost .. thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.
