The Old Couple
ripe in the silhouette of time
sprouts barbed thistle-down
inside their heart they face
the dark down-side of self
even as they speak of love,
(the cold rain of reason drizzles)
they shore up their autumn souls
against a reckless flood of passion
how far from romance here …
[read between the empty lines
of endless puerile competition]
lives the desire – to walk alone

There are some old couples like this. I think it’s sad. I’d like to think that had my husband lived, we’d be the kind that were still in love. We always liked each other very well.
Your writing rings true. Sometimes this world is a terribly disappointing place.

Yes, sometimes it is … I’ve seen this happen to many couples I’ve known … even when not so old. It’s important to be friends I think first and foremost .. thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.

The last line is absolutely true.

Yes, I think there’s a lot of truth there … as much as a person protests how much they love their other half if the case is this the message is often that they really want to be alone.

But by choice…

I know some couples who have arrived at the so-call “peace of the senses” (literal translation from Italian) … who live companionably with their spouse – each doing their own thing … they lead their lives walking their own road … but together – and it’s a choice.

Relationships are very complex. I agree communication and friendship are essential ingredients to a long term one.

Yes, keeping a relationship going over the years just based on physical attraction I think would be very hard indeed.
