the cold moon
through the window panes
in crystal patterns
midnight
walking under the cold moon
slipping on ice
last persimmons
fall from the barren tree
under the cold moon
fond farewells
parting friends on Arco’s bridge
under the cold moon

Carpe Diem #902 Kangetsu (cold moon)
Today’s kigo is from the classical collection called Saijiki, on the World Kigo Database, we are advised that kangetsu should not be mistakenly translated as “cold moonlight” which is something else but as “moon in the cold”, moon on a cold night. Here are a few examples furnished by Chèvrefeuille for our inspiration:
kangetsu ya kaisandoo no ki no ma yori
this cold moon –
among the trees
of the founder’s hall
kangetsu ya kareki no naka no take sankan
this cold moon –
among the bare trees
three stalks of bamboo
kangetsu ya koishi no sawaru kutsu no soko
this cold moon –
the soles of my shoes
touch small pebbles
kangetsu ya matsu no ochiba no ishi o iru
this cold moon –
fallen needles of pines
shoot into stones
kangetsu ya mon o tatakeba kutsu no oto
this cold moon –
after knocking at the (temple) door
the sound of wooden clogs
kangetsu ya zoo ni yuki-au hashi no ue
this cold moon –
I meet a monk
on the bridge

Here are Chèvrefeuille’s great contributions:
silent winter night
the full moon of January –
howling wolves
howling wolves
giving me the shivers –
praying for strength
praying for strength
as I see the bright Wolf Moon –
silent winter night

We had so many clouds that we couldn’t see.

Ah that’s a shame .. but the clouds keep it warmer maybe so preferred to those crisp cold clear nights.

Ah … so the snow falls in the right season after all. Funny how we always expect it to snow in late Novemeber or December … that’s actually autumn.

That’s true, isn’t it!

Yeah, everyone kind of forgets how the seasons really work and get all messed up because it began to snow in January. Of course, December was way too warm for autumn.

I like the persimmons. Here it’s apples, which fall one after the other.
Nice set!

Thanks … Here the apples are harvested in September and October. The persimmons are left on the trees for the most part unless someone cultivates them specifically .. which is a good thing for the birds.

Falling on ice made me chuckle but I put on cleats before getting off the bus, the 22nd it was a clear night and I got a shot but tonight (last night) walking home at almost midnight, I was lucky to get a few shots waiting for the clouds to pass. Your last one caught at my heartstrings…brava, cara.

We had a week of hazy and foggy skies and now we’re back to sunshine. So, we just get real cold temps and sunshine.

I hate wearing my cleats when I really don’t need them but I cannot bear another fall either.

Know what you mean … it is better safe than sorry, don’t want any fractured tail bones or whatever!

If only I would just let myself fall rather than trying to break the fall with a heavy 20lb + backpack on my back makes for more injuries. the sidewalks are almost all clear, so I may just use my cane tomorrow…
