Front Page: About Bastet and The Blog…

Lake Garda

Lake Garda

I’ve been writing this blog now since the second of January, 2013.  So far, it’s been a satisfying experience.  But why did I and do I write a blog?

Basically, I thought it would be nice to see if I could write something (outside of my tattered notebooks) and see if someone in the general public would find it interesting.  Then again, I also thought it might be a way to leave something for my children and grandchildren to remember me by once I “shuffle off this mortal coil”.

It’d been a long time since I’d written poetry and writing fiction has never been my forte.  I thought when I began that I’d just write about my opinions and ideas;  you know, the usual stuff like politics, world affairs, that sort of thing.  Then I found myself starting to write about my childhood memories and things that have (had) happened in my everyday life.  One thing led to another, and my first photo poem popped up, and I started a new category to house it called Pills, which has grown since with two sub categories called Haiku and Power Shorts (a nice prosy type of Haiku, I’ve discovered through another blogger, Rick Mallery). The possibilities grew, with the idea of using my umpteen bazillion photographs and writing stories or travelogues around them.

Some of my favourite pieces languished though, so I went back to them to see why they’d never been appreciated, and I discovered that yes, they may have been interesting to me, but they were poor things indeed.  The style was stilted and they weren’t very well illustrated…so I rewrote them and dressed them up a bit…sure enough, there was a lot more interest expressed in them.  Some of my older pieces I’ve rendered private though…I may or may not go back and have a look at them.

Next is the housing project…that is where I blog, my site or whatever you call it. I’ve worked on it from time to time, changing the header, adding and removing and rearranging widgets but, I’m still not happy with it.  So, I’ll have to go and figure out how to actually use the instruments that are provided to make a better site.  I’ll also have to figure out how to do a little work with computer language too if I really want to do those things that your standard WordPress word “elaborator” doesn’t allow you to do…like changing your script size gradually…from smaller to bigger.

Then, there’s the one thing that really bugs me a bit.  I’d like my blog to go beyond a Facebook sort of life.  I look at my stats, and they’re pretty great for a beginner I think, and I love it when I see all the places my blogs have been read  (love those maps)!  I’m happy that people read and like my posts, but I’d also like to see some comments from time to time.  The age of Facebook and Twitter seem to have reduced blogger’s comments to mere “likes”.  I was happy to see an article written about this on Blogher, so I stopped feeling paranoid, it’s a general problem.  I myself find myself reading and liking, just as though I’m browsing through the Facebook…but, I say to myself,  if I’d been satisfied with Facebook, I wouldn’t have started blogging.  Of course, the problem is that there are literally millions of people who are writing and posting daily…so I say, I work on my style right!

Update!  Since i wrote this intro, many things have happened:

First:  I became editor for WDBWP and do a three weekly article for them on photography.  The Tuesday Pixelventures’ Photo Prompt and the follow ups on Wednesday (Pixelventures’ Photo Finish – the results of the former Tuesday prompt) and Saturday (Pixelventures’ Close-up where I talk about photography, photographers, blogs et al that has to do with photography!).

Second: I became part of a Blog called the 13th Floor Paradigm, where I write about Japanese Poetry from time to time and do a Weekly Writing Prompt.

Third:  I write poetry for the Poet’s Corner…I try to get something up at least once a week.  It’s a great place to read other people who interested in poetry and of course be read!

Fourth:  I transferred my photography to its own blog called: “Through the Eye of Bastet”.

Me by my webcam

Me by my webcam

Just a last word:  I comment on people’s blogs from time to time…the problem is, that when I write my blogs, before I transfer them to WordPress, I use a program that has an automatic word corrector which keeps track of all my mistakes and either automatically corrects them or at least points them out…not so for comments.  There was an old rule that I’d learned in school, and it goes like this:  I before E except after C…when in doubt, I  follow that rule.  I’ll never understand why I keep misspelling this word: experience (truth be told…I tend to spell it expierience)?

  1. For some reason when I want to comment on something I have to read all the comments before doing so, it’s partly because I don’t want to repeat what other people have said and partly because of my nosey curiosity.
I was sad to see that you still don’t quite believe DragonSpark and I are two different people but I guess anything I say will just strengthen your belief.
I learned “I before e excpt after c but only if it rhymes with me” and I believe the ei in either or neither is supposed to rhyme with eye.
I came “here” to ask if you would be interested in “portraits” I took as prompts. Though I was (and am) a bit awed at everything you’ve achieved even just reading these comments.
Tell me if you’re interested 🙂

    • I do believe that DragonSpark and you are two differente entities, sorry I didn’t make that clear, but I’m not always sure whom I’m speaking with! The problem of reading all the comments can be a dilly…and interesting too! What did you mean about “portraints taken as prompts”? I do prompts for Mindlovesmisey’s Menagerie as well as We Drink Because We’re Poets and I usually do so using photos, sometimes other’s have contributed them. I like to use other people’s images, which I always give credit for on the posts I write. So, if I can understand what you mean, I may be interested 🙂

      • I see. I’m sorry I wasn’t at all clear, basically I took a few pictures I thought could make good prompts and I was wondering if you wanted to try one? Or put it on that site where you do shadormas?

      • How to know who you’re seaking with? If it’s poetry, it’s not me 😉 I’d NEVER heard of a “shadorma”, or even seen the word! I stumbled on this conversation on accident. You two have been busy with the poetry stuff lately…
Congrats to your imagination and ingenuity. I’ll stick to politics and fiction for now if you don’t mind.
        See you around Bastet! 😀

        • Hello DragonSpark!! So no poetry means ImabOOkworm and politics and fiction are you, thanks for the tip! Actually the shadorma isn’t one of the most tooted forms around, but then outside of the haiku most of the micropoems are pretty unknown. Thanks for dropping in and visiting, always nice to see you.

  2. It’s not difficult to generate comments but keeping up with the responses and making all the return visits needed becomes an enormous task. Yours is one of those blogs I’d like to visit more often but there are only so many hours in the day. Thank you for my ‘like’ today 🙂

    • You’re absolutely correct about what you say. At the time of writing this front page I had like 10 followers. It was easier to keep in touch with everyone, go visit and reply to comments and make my own comments. Now it’s become much much more difficult … I used to spend a couple of hours a day to read mail, blogs and comment. Now in a couple of hours I’ve just about finished reading the notifications of my commenters and should go to the reader and look at my e-mail. :-/ So, I know what you mean that you’d like to spend more time visiting blogs but there are only so many hours.

  3. Thanks for the reblog!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your ‘About’. When you learn how to change font size in a post let me know. At the moment it’s at the top of my list of things I want to be able to do.

Anyway … on the blog there’s the email button for following the blog and replying. I’ve now linked all my e-mails to my principle email account so I can run past them easily at least once a day without having to go specifically to them outside of libero. Thanks for the info and now … to read! (Welcome about the push 😉 )

    • Well . it’s still floating I think … I gave up the pixelventures experience quite a while ago as practically I was the only one writing for the blog. I think that Sahm paid for the domain and wasn’t sure if he wanted to keep doing that … I’ve seen that the FB page is gone or at least I couldn’t find it, which was all that was really doing anything when I pulled out.

There’s certainly a lot of turnover in blogosphere, that’s for sure!

If you receive any more, try to find out from where their sending their spam and report them to you server … in any caase, feel free to block any mail that comes from koch1952@libero.it. Can you please post a comment to the link at my site in this comment as well as the way you normally do…if that is via the Reader; Please time stamp them in the comment and tell where you are posting your comment from. So you will be posting twice to the same comment but from two different places.

    9.23.15 3.:30 pm my time
I’m going to ask two people to post to that comment via the page site, which you have listed above as well as via the Reader since I think that is where the problem is. I will ask them to time stamp their comment in the post so there is no question as to the time it is posted. And I will ask them to tell where they are posting from so perhaps it will be easier to ID where the problem is originating from.

      • Thank you!~ I’m not sure if the issue has been fixed. Another blogger posted three comments to the same post yesterday and the one from the WP Reader (the one you reach via the icon next to MY Sites when one is in the Dashboard of your site) didn’t reach my e-mail. Is that where you posted your ‘reader’ comment from?

Your comments made it to my e-mail. I’m not sure if the problem is from the Reader or if someone posts from the All Comments Section in the Dashboard. We’ll see. Thanks for your help.

          • I don’t get ‘likes’ e-mailed because I don’t have like at my sites. But while I was away I noticed I had more comments to my posts in the notification list than I did in my e-mail. I thought it might be just certain countries. I opened one forum, that got closed as ‘they’ thought the issue was solve or might have been my own phone issues. But it wasn’t so then I asked you and another person to e-mail to my post from different places. I’m still not sure if it is both a problem from the ‘Reader’ which I don’t use either. But it primary seems to be that if instead of working via the reply box window under the comment you go to the ‘All Comments’ where you can also make edits… that if you leave comments from there and hit send they go to the post, but not to e-mail. A quirk for sure. And well it’s not like I get tons of mail. But some posts do attract more response. And that’s how I notice it. I was going back and forth and noticed that some comments weren’t showing up in the e-mail.

I work with several folders open at a time. I have ‘B’ open just to make comments easier, and then my ‘in-box’, my WP dashboard, my drive and the pages I work at. I hope that makes sense. I think folks who work from tablets might also have some different issues than those who use a PC portable or Desktop. I could use my book-reader too but it is a pain to use the key board. I’m used to a larger key board and not one I have to gently tap. I mess up my passwords – so I don’t bother with it via the ‘android’.

            Liked by 1 person

          • Oh wow! I admit … I also usually have several tabs opened but I more or less throw out my e-mail notifications as I read them directly on the notifications page … this is also because there I usually get the answers to the replies I’ve made on other people posts .. an interesting quirk to be sure. I wouldn’t know about issues on androids and tablets … I do most of my work on my desktop computer … occasionally on my netbook (when I’m travelling) and as I said, I even more rarely go to my dashboard for comments.

            Liked by 1 person

          • Yes… I too toss and sort comments – I don’t like a crowded in-box. But you can’t delete what is in the notifications cue – it stays there until it ‘falls’ off which is about 60 or 80. So if you go dark for a week or so you would have to rely on your e-mail for comments because you wouldn’t see them unless you went directly to your post – if they didn’t get e-mailed that is. The only place where I can see the whole thread of a ‘conversation’ is on my post. After I comment back at the notifications site the comment I wrote disappears once I hit reply. And you can’t always reply on your post if you have it set up to a limited number of ‘replies’. You can only reply on the post or post comment if you see the ‘reply’ tab in/on the comment itself.

  11. Enjoyed reading about you. I tend not to worry too much about spelling etc. in my comments and most often I find mistakes because I write as quickly as I think, or I dictate and God knows what comes out. In the end, it’s about sharing with one another, isn’t it? I love Japanese poetic forms and look forward to seeing more of your work. Remember that post which you put up from OM … on that same “accounts settings” go to Notifications – Comments and check them. (unless of course you shut off the comments just for this post). If you’re on Facebook, you can send me a message to my mail-box there .. my Url is : https://www.facebook.com/Bastet1952. • That really sounds like a great experience. I’ve bee teaching TEFL and ESL for about 30 years now. I’m old enough now that I can choose what sort of classes I want to teach as I don’t actually have to make a living teaching any more. The best is conversation … and full-immersion neither speaking the other’s language is usually the best way to learn the language … That’s how I learnt Italian and French … later on you can do grammar but right off the bat, it’s good to really try to use the language.

            Like

          • at our community college they organized an ESL class, mostly locals who for one reason or another have lived there most of their lives but never learned proper English. I was just a tutor. My friend later did job like tutor Japanese engineers at Ford who wanted better conversational skills. She did a lot of ESL work…but I just volunteered.

          • It actually is a fun profession as well as a nice way to help people in our communities. I started out as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher for Italians and later when immigration picked up in Italy for Poles, Eastern Europeans and just about anyone who wanted to learn or improve their English, usually because they were hoping to move on the and English speaking country – now the emphasis is English as a Second Language … so the approach is different … more conversation less grammar and writing.

  12. one of the outrageous ideas here in the states is English-only, which is part of the current racist/egocentric movement….it favors the immersion method of learning languages, and is directed at requiring that only English be spoken/taught. Stupid, of course… Since there are many immigrant children (especially in Texas and other border states) the schools received federal money for bringing the kids up to speed…but forbids teachers to use ANY Spanish in teaching them. Teachers that defy that dumb rule and do bi-lingual teaching (especially in courses other than English itself…history, geography, math…) are told to do what they need to do, but shut up about it. One redneck parent can bring down a whole lot of grief on a teacher that doesn’t comply.

oops…sorry about the rant… the lack of intelligent support for language skills always manages to set me off. I refrain….. 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • Don’t worry about the rant … I’ve sent you a line .. not addressing this particular problem … I don’t know anything about teaching problems in the U.S: and have never been to Texas (I’ve lived in Italy for 46 years now 😉 ). However, it’s common practice here to do everything in the language one is trying to make one’s second language. One creates new neural pathways while learning and thinking in a language. That means there comes a moment when one doesn’t think in ones mother-tongue anymore but directly in the new language – what I mean here is there’s no need to think for example in order to say something in Italian. If one only wishes to learn a language as a foreign language, to read for example in that language or watch films and doesn’t need it for everyday life but occasionally, it’s less important to ground oneself that thoroughly in the language. So I’m afraid that it’s not so dumb to ground the kids directly in their new language … going back and forth from Spanish to English is not the best way to help the kids to make that essential jump from a foreign language to a second language. It is hard though .. that’s how i learnt Italian … those first months were hell because for me it was 24/7 absolutely in Italian. But it’s the only way to really make another language your second language and speak it just about as well as your mother-tongue.

      Like

      • let me expound on this in an email…the point is not the teaching of another language per se, it could be called “survival” language…direct application for general education. These are people who do not speak ANY English. What I am referring to is not ESL…

        Like

        • I read your interesting e-mail and agree that what’s taking place has little to do with ESL … of course the principle behind total immersion would be the same if the situation of the students and the system were similar … we have similar problems here in Italy with young people coming in from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa. The Italians aren’t equipped with teachers who speak all the various languages involved of the various children and adults who are trying to settle in Italy. It’s one of the most complicated problems the immigrants and their hosts have to face. And you’re right these are not part of the teaching challenges of an ESL program. In that situation the basic problem is psychological and special training for that sort of language teaching – and a vocation that goes beyond normal teaching challenges. If the U.S. is like Italy, the real issue is another – not a simple problem of helping motivated young adults to hone their skills but the integration of children and youngsters into a culture that is not their own.
