Trip to Pompey (A Cavatina)
We walked in rain ’til dusk fell on Pompey –
We were so tired –
My friends had come to see its ancient dust –
In just one day –
We changed our clothes and went into the streets –
In search of food –
One wanted meat the others fish of course –
I wanted home –
A glass of wine a plate of fish I sought –
I was hungry –
We searched the streets and found a restaurant
It was fancy –
We found a table and set down to read –
An old menu –
I saw a painting on the farthest wall –
In golden tones –
The waiter brought the shrimp with head and claws –
The ladies swooned –
We left the restaurant to my regret –
In quite a rush –
At Mac’s I had a fish-burger and fries –
I dreamt of shrimp and oysters and I cried.
