Morning Haiku and Waka – April 28, 2016

the lonely swan haiga

alone –
a swan swims into view
flowers blossom

§§§§

cold morning walk
north wind freezes the blossoms
snow dusts the mountains

§§§§§§

on this spring morning
looking at the snowy mount
and cherry blossoms
turning brittle on the trees
still – the birds huddle
no song fills the morning air
grey clouds hang heavy
and the northern winds whistle
ringing the wind chimes
making the trees bow low
and then for a moment –
a single ray of sunshine
escaped through the clouds
a single blackbird
began to sing his spring song
in the herb garden
a new sprout raises its head
there’s no denying
life’s warmth is a breath away
just waiting to be perceived.

§§§§

the stone wall
behind this screen holds up
my red clay tiled roof
and the nest of two sparrows
hear them twitter happily

The Cuckoo – Troiku – April 27, 2016

above the roof-tops
looking for a mate and host
the cuckoo calls

above the roof-tops
the cuckoo flies like a hawk
small birds hide

looking for a mate and host
thief and Romeo
cuckoo – cuckoo

the cuckoo calls
lazily from dawn to dusk
through spring and summer

Sunday Whirl – September 6, 2015

still lifechirping on a tree
the robin eats a fat worm
in an amber orb
the worm lived a secret life
in its scented foster home

fruitful apple tree
need not stop or worry
birds will deal with rot

speak to me of fall
and its seasonal delights
stop and observe
the easy life of birds
the miracle of life

soon a memory
summer’s cornucopia
full of fruit and worms
and early morning chirping
of hunting birds at dawn

Sounds, Smells and Light – Morning Haiku and Waka – September 30, 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAdawn fills the valley
with mystical pastel lights
the lake blushes

streaking pastel hues
behind the mountains lengthen
sparrows twitter

chitter-chattering
the sparrows swoop and swirl
ah – white cat hunting

– bells begin to ring
imagine the dawning morn
from the olive groves

awaiting breakfast
the room smells of banana
coffee and brioche

Haiku With HA – Birds May 15, 2014

spring is in the air
the birds are all courting now
they chortle and sing
looking for material
to build their summer’s nest

blackbirds, my favorites
sing out in the early morn
but sparrows are fun
they play tag on my terrace
in their loving hide and seek

ducks squawk on the lake
swans twine necks on the water
the swallows returned
from their winter homes down south
the coo-coo’s call fills the air.

spring is in the air
bird joy fills my eyes and ears
life renews the land

Poem: Summer Storm

Summer Storm

Mist grew over the mountains
the birds played in the sky
gliding along not flying
their wings opened
like tiny hang gliders
up and down they went
catching the streams of wind
I saw them come from afar
first one then two and more
bobbing in air not water
the storm behind them followed
the rain came down in torrents
beating on my window panes
and then like a dream
birds and water were gone!
