Green Tea and Life – Wordle – June 28, 2015

book cover

Ah what stories these eyes have seen
… each new voice – a clue to life
how my heart does dance and sing
… as ancient wisdom stirs inside
and I drink green tea and read of life.

Oh masters of the word write on
and take me by this willing hand
strum my heart-strings with your stories
of love and war and peaceful glory
as I drink green tea and read of life.

Vicariously I walk through all time
with glorious kings and humble knaves
each has a voice – each holds a clue
they hide behind words in books
so I drink green tea and read of life.

Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.

Nero Wolfe

Never do I tire of reading, Rex Stout’s omnia …
Even though I’ve read all his works in English and Italian!
Reading about that fat detective, makes me smile and laugh at once.
Oh how I love this guy and his side-kick Archie Goodwin!

When my days are full of strife, I search him out quite soon.
Once I’ve begun to read his tales, I just begin to melt.
Life seems somehow so much simplier, incredible but true.
Fantastic is his world of high class crime,
Entertaining and intelligent too!

Writing for Pooky’s Prompts was difficult this week because I have lots of favorite writers, but at the moment, I’m reading Nero Wolfe again…so I chose him for this acrostic. A week or so ago it would have been Terry Pratchett…or maybe Alessandro Baricco or the Brothers Grimm!

Rex Stout though has been a constant with me from my adolescence so it does seem appropriate to write about Nero Wolfe, my favorite detective along with Sherlock Holmes and Ellery Queen.

I searched for an illustration on the internet and this fantastic portrait came up on several sites…without credits!  So I enlarged the signature at the bottom of the picture and finally found the painter’s name and followed it to the blog linked to the portrait.  The original site of Kevin Gordan can be found HERE .

And then….Six Word Saturday

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOh boy, another second-hand comic book!

One of the best places in Trento is the “Libroteka”  It’s chocked full of just about every sort of second hand book you can imagine…including some great old (and in good conditon) comic books!

Here are some photos of my son’s second hand collection…and a copy of Lupo Alberto….

They…books are also me

Walking down the road of my life
many have had their influence
from parents to my many friends
and all the lovely books I’ve read…

I started out with Dr. Seuss
and with his funny hatted cat
I remember green eggs and ham
and all the laughs and fun I had…

Later came the small Borrowers
The Bobsey and the Boxcars twins
“The Pink Hotel” my first mystery
“The Hobbit” when I was thirteen.

“The White Lotus” made me ponder
the powers of non-violence…
“Walden’s Pond” on contemplation,
with Frost and his “Road Not Taken”.

Years tumbled by, I stumbled long
And each author left me something
From Lao Tzu to Dalai Lama
Buddha entered into my life

Karl Marx, Hegel, Heidegger, Stein,
Nietzsche and Freud, Jung and Wilhelm Reich
Chomsky, Zinn, Jared Diamond
and Capra…are a part of me.

If  Baricco and ms Nothomb
influence my daily thinking
Don’t forget Agatha Christie
And that French master Daniel Pennac!

Terry Prachett (he’s my hero)
and his witty friend Neil Gaiman
made me laugh and made me shivver…
(Neil even wrote for Dr Who)!

I could go on, and on and on…
So many have I encountered
Each one a contribution made
To who I am and soon will be.
