Ducks – A “Wildlife” Sketch in Six Sentences – March 24, 2016

ducks in a pond

Ducks … they’re one of the major attractions of Lake Garda and are with us all year around, having found the climate warm enough for them to avoid the long winter haul to the south.  Our “wild” variety are mallards and they’ve sometime mixed with domestic ducks creating some interesting new liveries.  This time of the year, spring, is always fun where ducks are concerned.  The males begin to search out their ladies love stalking the poor dears in groups until she gets exasperated and flies off with a “qua, qua, qua” that sounds almost like a disdainful laugh.  By June though the couples will have been formed and the chicks hatched.  The tourists arrive with their children, delighted by the families of ducks scooting along the beach and sand.

Tokubetsudesu #54 – wind and moon tanka – July 29, 2015

the summer wind
calls across the lake
whispering softly
invitations to travel
ah – I long to follow

gulls fly overhead
drifting on the evening breeze
the moon rises
couples walk along the shore
far far away from winter

over the mountains
the moon smiles sweetly
her veil half raised
playing coyly with lovers
and love-sick poets

The Vacation – July 8, 2014

The Vacation – Shadorma

A day trip
to Malcesine
first it rained
then it poured
we ran for cover laughing
hoping it would stop.

The lady
watched as we ran
just tourists
having fun
we entered her shop laughing
the pizza was good!

Haiku – Breeze – June 9, 2014

stiff and sustained
the hour has come to Garda
daily breeze

refreshing breeze
cooling torrid afternoons
siesta time

pinging sheets
the dock’s a concert hall
the breeze – soloist

through the vallies
blows the strong afternoon breeze
“l’ora” del Garda

The stiff afternoon breeze that we call “l’ora” (the hour) here in the Lake Garda area is so much a part of our summer life that this particular prompt could have become a haiku novella!  It begins down at the southern end of the lake and reaches Riva/Torbole between 11:00 to 1:00 and blows up the vallies all the way to Trento, helping to cool the whole area, eventually calming down to close to nothing in the late afternoon.

It gets so cool in the towns like Riva del Garda and Torbole, which are right on the lake,  that one must put on a sweater to be comfortable. The surfers love it when “l’ora” begins to ripple the lake  and they can start their daily runs!
