Biography in Twelve Verses

menacing challenge

a drifting figure
like a storm or summer breeze
– father

all-pervasive night

whimsy and horror
kaleidoscope of events

blocking the exit
growing up

pin-point and bright
wavering uncertainly
saving light

the inner voice commands
the silence

throwing off fear
trusting once again
or no

this closed window
keeping out the weather
and the sunshine

plain truth –
equilibrium isn’t
balancing stones

momentary dazzling light
in monotony

at sixty-four
a rocky stability
after the tears flowed

A to Z Challenge – The Letter J – April 12, 2016

jujube tree

jujube tree

In Jupiter’s jungle grow jujubes and junipers,
be-jewelled with jaded leaves and juicy fruits.
Julianne or Jennifer joyed in the fruits
And often junketed into the jungle.

Juno became jealous when her be-jowled
jovial old satyr went *jocking into the jungle,
looking for Julianne or Jennifer
Junketing for jujube fruits.

“Justice!” thought Juno,
(Juggling her Japanese
Jewelled shuriken)
“Justice and revenge!”

Justifiably worried, Jennifer was well read,
She avoided the jovicentric
Jungle as much as she could
Refusing to junket with Julianne again.

Julianne, a juvenile jitterbug queen,
Jubilantly jazz danced with Jupiter
‘Til his joints were like jellybeans,
Effectively curtailing his amorous jousting.

But Juno was jealous just the same
Unjustifiably jaundiced against women,
(Jupiter just could do Juno no wrong)
Until a certain joker Jinn jumped in.

With its Janus face, jolly and jeering,
The Jinn jostled her into being just!
She turned the tables and jocularly,
With Jacobean judiciousness,
Jiggled jellyfish into the Jovian jock strap.

*jocking: to engage in flirtatious behavior with another; to crush on someone; to hit on someone Brandon, constantly laughing, smiling, lightly touching and generally talking up a storm, was jocking Amanda.

Moulin Rouge Toulouse-Lautrec Paintings – 1890

Delightful Daphne,
Dowager dame
from Dorroughby downs
Danced (dusting daisies) at dawn
In damask digs,
Dumbfounding Daft old Dan!
(Doubting his eyes
Daft Dan did declare:
“Damn, I’m dreaming drivel!”)
Alas duly assured,
The delighted demented debaucher
Dropped down on his knees
Declaring his demise
If she denied his devotion.
Diffident in her dishevelment
Daphne demurred daintily,
“Devotion does demand a
Desirous dedication,
Disregard for dithering declarations
and I do mean durable discretion.
Do declare; “I Do! My dotty devotee”
Then dignify your declaration
With delightful deportment:
Dancing through the daisies
Disrobed at dawn with me!”

D is for Dragons

A to Z The letter “C” – April 4, 2016

Candy Caraway
Created a commotion
Crooning “Copacabana” as she
Careened ’round Carruthers’ Cafe,
Costumed in a cream coloured cambric costume!
“Uncannily cautious,
Curiously coy!”
Critics commented caustically:
“Cream cambric clashes colossally
with classic calypso castanets!”
Conga, calypso and Caribbean dance coaches
Clavered, clamoured and finally clambered
Cleaving consistently to clothe’s codes
centring on colorfully creole colours…
Candy Caraway,
Chuffed, cutely chirruped:
“Caramba! My cheesy chemise and costume
changes … crimson cream
creates a colourful costume
complimenting Caribbean Calypso –
critics – clamour no more!”

C is for Creation

NaMoWriPo – A to Z Challenge (B) – April 2, 2016

Blessings boisterous boy
Beaming broadly, blessings!
Bounding brave bold boyo
Bound bravely battle-wards;
Bold, brazen and buoyant
Bewondered by blarney
(Betrayed by balderdash)
Bravely bound battle-wards …
Babbling bold benighted blandishments,
Before being butchered
By bedevilled bombs.

I would there be some sweet blessing
That I could grace upon you now,
Though you disregard affection
And fly off wantonly into battle’s arms,
Not knowing all men’s truths,
You just heed banal propaganda –
Promulgations made by withered men
Without memory of light or love –
They bless you with their blandishments
Beseeching your supreme sacrifice
As they sit inside their bunkers safe
Far from the battle’s fumes.

Ah the stupidity of youthful
Fascination with blood and honour!
Ignorant of history
And the tons of youthful cannon fodder –
Pages – no full volumes filled
With lists of nameless boys,
Turned to meat and mud …
And what has it ever changed,
Their supreme sacrifice,
Except to make some old jerk
More powerful …
Who then in turn must die …
And ’round and ’round the old game goes
For all of endless time.

B is for Blessings, Breathing and Being

A is for Awakening – A to Z Challenge – April 1, 2016

I woke up with the feeling I should try to write a poem using words that begin with A ….

Awaken august aerial Augier
Announce April’s auspicious actions
Avoiding anguished answers
Angle after affirmations
Avoiding anxious abandoning
Angelophany allowed,
Auspicious ascertainment,
Awakening astonishment,
And Affectionate alleviation.

A is for Awakening My Voice

Awaken to Live – A to Z Challenge (Cleave Poem – NaPoWriMo) – April 1, 2016

Awaken now my love let hope into your heart
See, the sun is shining, no longer lament your sort
Feel the warmth of spring, winter’s time is passing
Hear the black-bird sing – forget the howling winds
No longer grope in slumber, for a new dawn is born
Awaken now to life – rejoice my love, rejoice!
