Poppies – Haiku Review – February 12, 2015

poppies among graves
our crosses marking rows
silenced nature

delicate
scarlet as roses in the arbour
poppies in the fields

poppies and daisy’s
fields covered in red and white
hazy summer dreams

flowering grape vines
tattered by the summer storms
poppies flourish

their mothers call
daisy chains are abandoned
among the poppies
delicate beauties
so frail and so short lived
poppies and snow

The last haiku is a late arrival … inspired by Robert Burns quote on pleasure …

  1. I find this one to offer the availability of connecting differently with each reader. I cannot help but notice how poppies in poetry are so often associated with graves. It gives a glimpse into how poetry does shape the world, we are just not aware of it at times.
Oh, I like the photo as well, and the effect you used, it looks just like a canvas 🙂

    • True … here in Europe we tend to see the poppy as associated with battle fields and war … and I think that has a lot to do with this poem:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
      In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
      In Flanders fields.

The British use the poppy as a commemoration flower for WWI and the Italians have a saying that each poppy in a field represents a fallen soldier … we don’t seem to have that tradition in the United States to the best of my knowledge though .. and I’ve always seen the poppy as brightly dressed dancers in the fields.

I had fun playing with that photo and making a sort of post-impressionistic painting out of it, I’m happy you enjoyed it!

      • It is true, poppy is used similar in literature and art here on the Balkans. One of my favourite bands even made a song using it as this metaphore. I find it strange and powerfull at the same time how one definition can seem to fully enclose and grasp a complete meaning, how it can dictate in a way , perhaps even subconciously, where it will appear in future writing 🙂
