This week on Haiku Shuukan we begin a new spiritual journey, let me quote our host:
” … I have found a new “spiritual” series of prompts starting this week with “I have managed to reach perfection”.
This sentence is from the short novel “The Way of the Bow” by Paulo Coelho. In this novel he describes the spiritual path of the Bow, the Japanese art of archery. This sentence is said by a man who challenges Tetsuya, the most important character in this novel, to shoot the bow with him.”
I’m inclined to believe that perfection doesn’t exist … in the sense that something that cannot be improved, which of course is the meaning of perfection, doesn’t exist. But we can try to look for a relative perfection … always considering that in this world of constant change that perfection will be gone with a blink of the eye. So I’m looking at perfection as a relatively perfect moment.
I took th photograph of the above rose a week ago. It was really very nearly a perfect shot in the sense that the rose came out beautifully … of course the photo isn’t perfect because the background is not very pretty and to work around this I’d have to cut the rose out and superimpose it onto a better background. I decided that I would monochrome the photo and see what would happen – whilst I was looking at it in my editor, I noticed for the first time a tiny spiderweb among its leaves… an imperfection right? Well obviously not from the spider’s point of view! So I decided that that spiderweb would be my idea of perfection … a beautiful rose which also gives hospitality to a spider one cold winter morning.
power failure
stumbling in the morning dark
– a drop of water
in the early morn
darker than middle ages
no power – silence
gas heater dripping water
on a power strip at night

I’m terribly late writing my posts this morning due to my water heater, as you may have understood reading the tanka (not one of my better ones, I know).
This morning I woke as usual at 5:00 (actually 4:00 as I haven’t changed my inner clock back to real-time yet) and the light beside my bed didn’t work. I stayed in bed a while longer thinking the problem might be a general black-out, not really that unusual … then I realized that outside my house, the street lights were on.
It became apparent that there was a short circuit somewhere in the house. We have different power breakers to isolate different parts of our house so, turning one off one at a time, we (in the meantime I woke hubby up) had narrowed the problem down to the heater and general lights (bathroom, stairs and kitchen were ok). Unplugging everything as well as unplugging the water pump of the gas heater, didn’t resolve our problem … the circuit breaker stayed off. Finally I went to my son’s bedroom, where I’d forgotten to unplug his computer, stereo etc which are connected to a power strip. Near his computer I heard a pluck – pluck – pluck … water was dripping onto the power strip. Pulling that plug we were finally able to restore the lights to the rest of the house.
My husband found the leak … fixed it and finally at 8:00 real-time … we were back in the 21st century, power and heating working properly. I hope to be able to write something more later today, but to be on the safe side, I’m linking these poems to OctPoWriMo. Have a great day folks!
